Reading Fluency Passage for Older Struggling Readers | Dyslexia Reading Practice | 5-Day Nonfiction Lesson PDF

Help your older struggling reader build fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence with a parent-guided nonfiction reading lesson about bluegill fish.

This printable reading fluency lesson is designed for parents who want to support a child at home but are not sure exactly what to do each day. Instead of handing your child another random passage, this lesson walks you through a simple 5-day routine with prediction, repeated reading, vocabulary, comprehension, text evidence, and final fluency practice.

Your child reads the passage each day. On timed reading days, you will record words read and missed words. On non-timed reading days, the focus is on reading smoothly, accurately, and with expression.

This lesson is especially helpful for older readers who need extra fluency practice, including many children with dyslexia or reading delays, but who are ready for topics that feel more interesting and age-respectful.

HOW IT WORKS

Day 1: Predict + Cold Read
Your child looks at the title and picture, makes a prediction, listens to the passage read aloud, then completes a one-minute cold read.

Day 2: Vocabulary Builder
Your child reads the passage again, focusing on smooth and accurate reading. Then your child learns a meaningful vocabulary word from the passage, including the definition, part of speech, and sentence practice.

Day 3: Check Prediction
Your child rereads the passage, focusing on accuracy and expression. Then your child checks whether the prediction was correct.

Day 4: Understand & Prove It
Your child reads the passage again, focusing on smooth, accurate reading. Then your child answers comprehension questions from memory before looking back in the passage to find the sentence that supports the answer.

Day 5: Final Read & Reflect
Your child completes a final timed read, compares growth, and reflects on what they learned.

READING LEVEL

This lesson roughly corresponds with All About Reading Level 2 skills and is best for readers who are comfortable with short vowels, blends, digraphs like sh, ch, th, and ck, ng words, simple silent-e words, and some high-frequency words.

Because every reader is different, parents can offer as much support as needed. The goal is not perfection. The goal is growth, confidence, and meaningful reading practice.

WHY PARENTS LIKE IT

This lesson gives you a clear structure so you are not guessing what to do. The parent follow-along copy includes word counts, making timed reads easier to track. The nonfiction topic keeps the lesson interesting for older children who may feel discouraged by reading materials that seem too young.
