What to Do If Your Child Doesn’t Understand Multiplication

If your child does not understand multiplication, starting with flashcards usually makes everything feel worse. I know that sounds obvious, but I think a lot of us end up there anyway.

We see the math book moving forward. We see the facts showing up again and again. We know multiplication is one of those skills that everything else seems to build on. So we think, Okay, we just need to practice more.

More flashcards.

More worksheets.

More reminders.

More “you knew this yesterday.”

But when a child does not really understand what multiplication means, all that extra practice can feel like asking them to memorize a language they do not speak yet.

And if you have a child who struggles with memory, attention, dyslexia, language processing, or just gets overwhelmed when math becomes independent, it can become discouraging fast.

I have been there.

I have sat beside a child who could follow along when I explained the problem, but then froze when it was time to do it alone. I have watched a child guess because they did not know what else to do. I have wondered if I was helping too much, not helping enough, or somehow making it harder.

What helped me was stepping back and asking a different question.

Not: How do I make this child memorize faster?

But: Does this child actually understand what the multiplication problem is showing?

Because multiplication has to mean something before the facts can stick.

Multiplication makes sense when children can see it, build it, and talk about it in their own words. Here’s how to help—without the stress.

 

1. Start With Equal Groups

The first place I would start is with equal groups.

A problem like: 3 × 4 does not just mean “three times four.”

It means: 3 groups of 4

That is the idea your child needs to see, touch, build, and say out loud before you worry about speed.

You can make this very simple. Grab a piece of paper and a handful of beans, buttons, coins, crackers, or blocks. Draw three circles.

Say: “These are our groups.”

Then place four objects in each circle.

Say: “We made 3 groups. Each group has 4.” Then count the total together. Write: 3 × 4 = 12

Then say: “Three groups of four equals twelve.”

That is a multiplication lesson.

It may look too simple, but for many children, this is the missing step.

2. Ask Better Questions

When a child is struggling, it is easy to ask:

“What’s the answer?”

But if the meaning is shaky, that question puts pressure on the part that is already weak.

Try asking:

  • How many groups do we have?
  • How many are in each group?
  • Do all the groups match?
  • What does the equation mean?

Those questions slow the problem down and help your child notice the structure.

Multiplication is not just about getting to the answer. It is about understanding the groups.

3. Watch For Guessing

If your child starts guessing, I would not push harder.

Guessing usually means the problem has become too big, too abstract, or too overwhelming in that moment.

Instead of saying, “Try again,” you can say: Let’s build it so we can see it. Then go back to the groups.

That one sentence can change the whole tone of the lesson. It tells your child, We are not panicking. We are not proving you can’t do this. We are just making the thinking visible again.

4. Move Forward Slowly

Once your child can build and explain equal groups, then you can begin moving toward anchor facts.

Anchor facts are the facts children can return to again and again, like:

2s, 5s, 10s

These facts become helpful landmarks. Then, when a fact like 6 × 7 comes up, your child does not have to rely only on memory. They can think: I know 5 groups of 7. I need one more group of 7.”

That is a very different kind of learning than staring at a flashcard and hoping the answer appears.

5. When Multiplication Still Doesn't Stick

Some children need more explicit teaching than a standard math workbook provides.

They need someone to show them:

  • what multiplication means
  • how to build it
  • which facts to return to
  • what to do when they do not remember
  • how to practice without becoming overwhelmed

That does not mean they are lazy.

It does not mean they are not trying.

It does not mean you have failed as their parent or teacher.

It may simply mean they need a clearer path.
